INSCRIBED BY THE AUTHOR (1873) on half-title where his cameo photo has been pasted, evidently cut from some other source. Spine tips and corners worn, with extremities rubbed.

1904-1908. Uniform edition in three-quarter brown calf and marbled boards; gilt-decorated spine; marbled endpapers; top edge gilt. Illustrated with frontispiece portraits, colourplates and numerous nature photographs of the era. Some slight rubbing to extremities, and one or two scuffs to leather. Burroughs (1837-1921) was a renowned American naturalist and, as a nature essayist, second only to Thoreau. Known as The Grand Old Man of Nature, the immensely popular Burroughs was an important early influence on the U. S. conservation movement. His first book, Wake-Robin (1871) forms the first volume of this 15-volume set, taking his work up to 1908, and which also includes Winter Sunshine, Birds and Poets, Locusts and Wild Honey, Pepaction, Fresh Fields, Signs and Seasons, Indoor Seasons, Riverby, Whitman, The Light of Day, Literary Values, Far and Near, Ways of Nature, Leaf and Tendril (1908). Burroughs kept writing until his death in 1921.
