xviii + 468 pp. Custom-bound by ZAEHNSDORF with binder's label. Off-white cloth with gilt snowflake decoration, repeated on gilt-ruled spine; gilt spine title on brown; top edge gilt. Marbled slipcase with brown leather spine label lettered in gilt. 23 wood-engraved plates plus 107 textual illustrations; 5 engraved maps, folding. This edition restores matter omitted from 3rd edition; has been generally revised & corrected, its history of the Matterhorn brought up to date, a number of new illustrations added for the first time, and three of the maps re-engraved on copper. Two new frontispiece illustrations have been bound in at time of rebinding, inlcuding colour photograph of the Matterhorn and sepia photograph of one of Alpine chalets near Zermat, whose disappearance is lamented by the author in his preface to this edition. Ink name on front free endpaper (dated 1893), with pedigree of previous owner pencilled in. Leaf split over front & rear hinges but very firm. Slipcase near fine.
