Original steel engraved map with hand-coloured outlining. From a series of 80 such maps Tallis produced during the early 1850s. Delicately engraved, all include vignettes depicting famous landmarks or inhabitants of the particular area involved. This one icludes a Russian bear, a travelling sledge, a view of St. Petersburg, and Polish captives being marched to Siberia. Full sheet 14″ x 11″ (37 cm x 27 cm). Decorative border. Ink number and two closed tears to top margin; a few minuscule ink dots highlighting cities on the map, and bottom edge nicked; otherwise a nice clean copy.
