Hardcover. Original purple ribbed cloth with paper spine label. viii + 332 pp. Name on half-title (1842), and partially rubbed out name on title page; small rubber stamped name on front endpapers, half title, twice on title page, and on upper margin of p.i; cloth rubbed and slightly faded & spotted; borders sunned; spine faded; slight chips and rubbing to paper spine label; binding cracked, but firm; endpapers and half-title foxed, with some soiling; interior otherwise bright with some marginal foxing & soiling. Rare! Heywood, a friend of Fletcher Christian’s, was 17 when the Bounty mutineers held him back when they cast Bligh adrift. Later brought back to England, he was sentenced to hang, but was granted an unconditional pardon, was allowed to rejoin the navy, and had a distinguished career, nearly making the rank of Admiral. In 1818 he turned down the post of Commodore in the Great Lakes of Canada, citing ill-health.
