12 engraved plates from folio of 1820, which was the last of the acceptable Hogarth prints from the original plates. Set consists of: Frontispiece and Explanation (with cameo portrait of Samuel Butler); How he sally’d forth; Hudibras’s first adventure; Hudibras catchiz’d; Hudibras vanquish’d by Trussa; Hudibras in tribulation; Hudibras and the lawyer; Hudibras beats Sidrophel and his man Whacum; The Committee; Hudibras triumphant; Burning the Rumps at Temple Bar; Hudibras encounters the Skimmington. The last two images measure approx. 10 1/2 ” x 19″ (26.5 cm x 48 cm), including legends; the rest are two to a plate, each image, including legends, measuring approx. 10 1/4″ x 13″ (25.5 cm x 33 cm). All engravings are clean, bright and sharp, although surrounding white sheets have glue shadow from tissue guards and occasional faint soiling. Images are based on Hogarth’s small book illustrations for Samuel Butler’s “Hudibras”, before 1725, of which there were originally 17. Sold unmounted.
