Baltic Sea. Hand-coloured Map (ca. 1850s)

Original steel engraved map with hand-coloured outlining. From a series of 80 such maps Tallis produced during the early 1850s. Delicately engraved, all include vignettes depicting famous landmarks or inhabitants of the particular area involved. This one includes views of Kronstadt, St. Petersburg, Abo and Hellsingfors. Folded sheet 14″ x 11″ (37 cm x 27 cm). Decorative border. Margins chipped and slightly soiled; fold shows faintly, with closed tears at extremities; otherwise a nice clean copy.
