Ceylon. Hand-coloured Map (ca. 1850s)

Original steel engraved map with hand-coloured outlining. From a series of 80 such maps Tallis produced during the early 1850s. Delicately engraved, all include vignettes depicting famous landmarks or inhabitants of the particular area involved. This one depicts the ruins of a Dagoba at Toopharamaya, the temple of Buddha at Kalany, and views of Columbo, Adam’s Peak, and the Lake of Kandy. Full sheet 14″ x 11″ (37 cm x 27 cm). Decorative border. Ink number, small chip and crease to top margin; otherwise a nice bright copy.
