822 pp. Blue cloth with orientalist cover design in gilt; partial title gilt on blue amid stars above main title in blue on gilt crecent moon; design repeated blind-stamped on back cover; spine decoration and lettering, gilt; bevelled boards; all edges gilt. 200 illustrations, chiefly by A. B. Houghton, with others by John Evrett Millais, John Tenniel, and Thomas Dalziel; all engraved by the Brothers Dalziel. Original spines slightly faded, rubbed, and rebacked; new endpapers; extremities rubbed, but with a bright, virtually fresh interior and illustrations. A lovely copy of this magnificently illustrated work which the Atheneum of the day hailed as a milestone for English publishing: ” We believe the issue of a book in this manner marks an era of importance in the history of its class and that the employment of genuine artistic ability…is what is required to bring English book-illustrating to the level of practice of our German and French neighbours.”
