82 pp. on pur fil Lana, unbound as issued, in self-wraps laid into boards with paper spine label. With 7 original engravings by Duchamp, Gleizes, Laurencin, Metzinger, Picasso, and Villon, and 4 engravings after Braque, Derain, Gris and Leger. Boards slightly bowed, with some light rubbing to slipcase, and very faint age-darkening to wraps; but interior is fresh with all plates present. A seminal book when first published in 1912, coining the word Cubism, this 1947 edition is enlarged with a preface by Gleizes and an appendix entitled “1912-1946” by Metzinger, bringing the history of the movement up to date. By that time only three impressions had been made of Picasso’s contribution, “L’Homme au Chapeau” (1914/15). Villon’s “Le Cheval” was made especially for this edition, but Duchamp’s “Coffee Mill”, advertized as one of the original engravings by the artists, was actually engraved by his brother, Jacques Villon. Goeppert, Goeppert-Frank, & Cramer, #46 (Picasso); Ginestet & Pouillon, #E 295 (Jacques Villon); Schwarz, #398 (Duchamp). This edition was published 31 July 1947, and our copy is #372/400 of a total editon of 450. Text in French.
