Hardcover. Grey cloth decorated in black; spine and cover lettering in gilt and black, with uncial letters alternately gilt on black and black on gilt. xiv + 319 pp. + ads. Illustrated with 2 folding colour maps and woodcut plate of ancient coins. Pencil name on front free endpaper, and ink name on upper margin of title-page; ink annotation on ffep verso; extremities slightly rubbed; endpaper leaf split over hinges, but firm; else a wonderfully tight, bright copy, including the covers. The ink annotation on ffep verso reads: “From the author”. Since we have been unable to verify the author’s handwriting, we cannot say whether the annotation is the author’s inscription as a presentation copy, or whether it is the previous owner’s note that he got the copy directly from the author, thus possibly making it a presentation copy after all. The likelihood is somewhat increased by the fact that the previous owner (both ink and pencil names) was General Sir Peter Lumsden, as we have ascertained from his title inscribed in other books bearing his ownership.
