Hardcover. 2 vols in one (1899; 1900). 399; 400 pp. Contemporary custom binding in red half-leather and probably original red cloth; raised bands; gilt-stamped date on cover; spine lettering and spine decorations gilt; all edges gilt; silk endpapers. Illustrated with numerous engravings and countless illustrations in text. Slight soiling and a couple of scratches to cloth; some rubbing to spine edges and raised bands, and slight splitting of leather at foot of spine hinge (approx. 1″); interior bright and crisp with negligible browning to margins only. Gilt-stamped cover date, 1904, added when the volume was bound thus. Wiseman’s “Fabiola” is apparently an “archeological novel” set in the days of the early Christian martyrs, and is translated from the English. Sepet’s history of Joan of Arc is well-known. Text in French.
