Ink inscription on front free endpaper (dated 1873); extremities and raised bands rubbed, with slight wear to corners; light, not too perceptible, wrinkling to cloth; hinges started but very firm; prelims slightly foxed, and light soiling to endpapers; faint stains to plate margins and versos, not affecting illustrations; edges tanned; interior otherwise tight, clean and bright. A nineteenth-century edition of Foxe’s Book of Martyrs. Focusing mainly on the protestant maryrs during the reign of Bloody Mary, the Book of Martyrs was, in the reign of her successor, Elizabeth I, mandated to be placed in every parish church in England, next to the Bible.
