Original three-quarter burgundy leather and marbled boards; raised bands; spine lettering and decoration gilt; marbled endpapers; all edges gilt. 3 vols (unpaginated). 300 + 1 (300A) plates plus accompanying text, and index in volume 1. “Chromo-lithographed by and under the direction of W. R. Tymms, A. Warren, and G. MacCullogh, from photogravures supplied by the London Photographic and Stereoscopic Company, taken exclusively for this work by Stephen Thompson.” 301 jewel-like full-page chromolithographed plates (on some you can even feel the texture of the ink). Each volume also has ornate colour title-page in addition to printed title-page. Ex library with library plate on front pastedowns; small institutional blind stamp on title pages and elsewhere, including some plate margins (but quite unobtrusive); library number and stamped withdrawal date on copyright pages; v.1 hinges clumsily repaired; v.3 hinge and prelims detached; leather and boards scuffed and rubbed; spine slightly faded & rubbed, with small paper shelf label at spine heads; some foxing to prelims; ink stains on v.3 fore-edge, minimally penetrating some plate margins; interior otherwise clean & bright, in fact pretty much Near Fine with especially sparkling plates.
