Hardcover. 538 pp. Full red leather ruled in gilt, with gilt-decorated covers, spine coffers and raised bands; all edges gilt; bevelled boards; book mark sewn in. Errata slip laid in. The book originally belonged to James S. Benedict, New York-born U. S. consul in New Brunswick from the latter part of the 19th century to the early part of the 20th, who has written his name in neat copperplate hand on front pastedown, and diagonally across title of title-page. Corners and head of spine rubbed, with slight rubbing to other extremities; front endpaper leaf split over hinge. Spot of rubbing to rear cover slightly affects gilt rule. About half the volume is devoted to American issues relating to the Franco-Prussian War (1870-71), including a visit by General Sheridan to German Hedquarters and his reports on the battles of August 16 & 18, 1870. The President’s address is by Ulysses S. Grant.
