Original soft-ground etching with title. Plate size, 9 3/4″ x 8 1/8″ (25 cm x 21.1 cm) plus margins. Caricature of a couple of seedy-looking philosophers deep in argument, originally sketched by Annabale Carracci. Light soiling to one margin, and two very small patches of foxing only on image background. Pond was an 18th c. engraver, especially noted for his portraits and engravings after Italian old masters, including a series of caricatures of which this one.
