Hardcover. 19th c. custom-binding in half-leather and marbled boards; marbled edges. xxiv, 324 pp. Urbini. Sumptibus Hieroymi Mainardi. MDCCXXXVI. Praesidum Permissu. Copiously illustrated with engraved illustrations of Terence’s characters (almost one illustration every page), and engraved ornate tailpieces at the end of each act of a play; a few full-page plates of Roman dramatic masks. The illustrations are from a codex in the Vatican Library. Title-page is printed in red & black, with large engraved armorial vignette. This edition advertises itself as the first ever with parallel Latin & Italian texts; prefatory material is all in Latin. Index. Bookplate on front pastedown; spine slightly rubbed, with some slight flaking to spine gilt; board extremities rubbed, with light wear to corners; edge-marbling faded; .interior otherwise Near Fine, with very little of the usual staining and soiling in a book of this age, practically no foxing at all, and only 10 browned pages near the centre of the book; one leaf (pp. 31-32) is missing top corner, not affecting text. Text in Latin & Italian.
