Spain and Portugal. Hand-coloured Map (ca. 1850s)

Original steel engraved map with hand-coloured outlining. From a series of 80 such maps Tallis produced during the early 1850s. Delicately engraved, all include vignettes depicting famous landmarks or inhabitants of the particular area involved. This one includes Belem Castle, Spanish dancers, views of Lisbon, Madrid and Gibralter, and a bullfight. Full sheet 14″ x 11″ (37 cm x 27 cm). Decorative border. Ink number on top margin, and some neat ink annotation (place names and dots); corner crease, not affecting map; some light soiling to margins, and chipping to one; otherwise a nice clean copy.
