(6) pp. + frontispiece + 56 pp. 3/4 deep blue calf, gilt-ruled, and marbled boards; raised bands, gilt; maroon calf spine label with spine lettering, gilt; marbled endpapers; top edge gilt. Illustrated with 29 engraved plates and vignettes by P. W. Tomkins, two of which are in colour; two headpieces; frontispiece portrait of Princess Elizabeth, daughter of George III, the “illustrious personage” of the subtitle, who made the original drawings for the engravings. Bookplate; small chip to spine label, affecting two letters of spine title; extremities rubbed; frontispiece detached; but otherwise a sparkling little jewel of a copy with almost no foxing. P. W. Tomkins (1740-1840) was the historical engraver to Queen Charlotte, who, however, began his career by working after the manner of Angelica Kauffman, which the lightness of touch and grace of these engravings reverts to. Tomkins later specialized in reproductions of old masters, often in colour, which he did for the Stafford Gallery.
