Illustrated with steel engraved plates after paintings by Frith, Maclise, Orchardson, Arthur Hughes and others. Steel engraved title-page vignettes; v.1 frontispiece portrait of Shakespeare engraved from the Chandos portrait. Edited, with notes, by Charles Knight. Leather rubbed on extremities, especially corners, and cloth slightly faded in parts; v.1 has small bruise to rear board edge near lower corner, and to rear board leather near spine; v.2 has cracked binding with one page only detached; both volumes have absolutely negligible foxing, and only a touch of marginal soiling to last page of v.2 index.
