London: Richard Bentley, 1853. 8vo. 2 vols. in one, separately paginated. xix, 311; viii, 344 pp. The 1st ed. was published in 2 volumes; this is an issue of the first edition bound into one volume with title-pages and contents to each volume present. Spine rebound in red leather, ruled and lettered in gilt; original blind-stamped red cloth; new endpapers. One corner worn, extremities rubbed, and some minor chipping to original cloth where it joins the new spine; else a clean tight copy. Page xiii (containing end of preface) is misbound between pp. xviii and xix of contents. Strickland was the brother of Susanna Moodie and Catharine Parr Trail. He came to Canada in 1825, became a justice of the peace, and was a militia officer during the Rebellion of 1837. Working for the Canada Company, he was involved in the early settlement of Guelph and Goderich. He was also a noted observer of the Native life around him.
